9 February 2023Pakistan has been one of the longest-serving United Nations (UN) peacekeeping nations over the six decades or so. Its commitment to international peace and security is well recognised as it has played a crucial role in maintaining security and stability in many conflict-prone areas worldwide. This Special Report by ISAS, COSATT and KAS examines the brief history of the UN peacekeeping since its inception. It also includes analyses on Pakistan’s participation in peacekeeping missions from three broad categories: historical context; contemporary perspectives; and international relations and domestic politics. Finally, it also offers broader insights into how the UN’s peacekeeping role may be more effective and sustainable in the future.
